Falls Creek, Big River

Thursday, Jan. 1

Today we headed back into the parks. In this case it would be the Victorian Alpine NP. We drove from Wodonga through Mt. Beauty and across the Alps to Falls Creek. Sally didn’t like this climb very much with more ziggy bits and steep drop-offs.

The clincher came at Falls Creek when Sally had had enough of mountains and wanted off ASAP.

After getting some advice from the Information Centre, I convinced Sally to push on south towards Omeo. This advice was, although it was a gravel road, it was more scenic and a lot flatter through the plain. We drove past the Rocky Valley Reservoir across the Bogong High Plains Road heading to the Omeo Hwy turn-off.

On the Omeo Hwy we came across three camp grounds on the Big River. In the third, we found an excellent riverside camp space and decided this would be our home for the next two nights.

Friday, Jan. 2

Today was spent wondering aimlessly up and down the Big River. We spotted trout fishermen and canoeists and looked long and hard for evidence of fish but I suspect this section of river, just upstream from Fisherman’s Rest, has been heavily fished.

In the evening, we socialized with a couple returning to Sydney, exchanging stories of where we’d been and where we were going. After some cheese waffles and some beers, it was off to bed ready to break camp in the morning.

Saturday, Jan. 3

We headed up the Omeo Hwy back to Wodonga. We had arranged to meet up with Mike and Jan on Sunday in Wodonga and thought we could use an extra day to catch up with laundry and pick up supplies. We returned to Edwards Tavern that evening for another huge meal and retired early.

Sunday, Jan. 4

Sally’s gone shopping and left me to do laundry with only a couple of dollar coins and no car. I scrounged up enough for 1 load and sat around aimlessly for the next 2 hours waiting for Sally to return with a replacement pair of tracky-daks after leaving her last pair on the cubicle door of the ladies shower at the Hobart Beach Campground at Bourndra NP. (If anyone’s found them, please let us know)…
Upon her return, I headed off to the local internet café to update this blog.
Mike and Jan arrived late afternoon and we legged it to Edwards Tavern for more Bistro Fair and lots of catching up, keen to head on down the Murray in the morning.
