King Fisher Tour, Echuca-Woana

Thursday, Jan. 8

We broke camp and headed for Moama/Echuka.

Last Look at Ulupna Island Campsite.

On the way we stopped for a tour on the King Fisher Cruise at the western end of the Barmah SP.

We were encouraged to look for the boat’s name sake along the banks and Sally was lucky to catch one on film.

The searched for a Van Park for water, electricity and showers in Echuca proved fruitless and Woama was almost a difficult. We finally found 2 available spots at the Murray River Holiday Park so we settled in there. Dinner at the Shamrock Hotel in Echuca was excellent and then back to camp for an early night.

Friday, Jan. 9

We set off exploring Echuca, Mike and Jan’s mission was to hunt out a paddle steamer so we could take a cruise on the Murray. Sally and I went to the library to use their internet to book our passage across Bass Straight. After securing passage to Tasmania for January 28 I visited the Holden Museum in Echuca. This display was excellent with examples of most Holden models produced in Australia.

When we caught up we Mike and Jan we were ecstatic to learn that they had managed to book a 3 hour dinner cruise on the PS Emmylou. This was an excellent example of a passenger paddle steamer.

The food was excellent and we had access to the engine room and bridge where we met the skipper and I got to sound the steam whistle.

We returned to camp to a restless night kept up by noisy partygoers until the wee hours. Only the knowledge that we were heading back into seclusion tomorrow maintained our sanity.
